Carrot Harvest

This was the first harvest of our carrots. All sorts of colors, and they are ("were," I should say...) very sweet.

We learned a lot growing these. The ones in the photo that have a long, skinny root at the end...those could have been left in the soil longer to grow bigger. However, we needed the room in the bed for the autumn crop, so we pulled them.

The soil should be free from any clumps of dirt, rocks, or any other impediments -- IF we want long, straight produce. We got quite a few homumculi, since we didn't clear the bed beforehand. We did not hear them scream when pulled, and we didn't die (like folklore says about mandrake when harvested). Then again, they're carrots, not mandrakes.

After the rain

Flyover country has gotten a lot of rain lately, and the resulting floods have been in the news. Thankfully, the last few days we have had sunshine. Beautiful, and a relief.

I finally got the rest of the broccoli planted, and got another round of spinach and lettuce seeds in. Next are the fast-growing beans.

Here is a photo from a rainy day recently passed.

Holly blogging

The bushes outside my office during the December 2008 ice storm...beautifully sparkling with ice in the late afternoon sun.
